How do you know that a destination or hotel is sustainable?
There are many ways, but the first thing is to start talking about your own sustainable tourism measures so that people can learn about it in the first place.
This is what we at Krepelin started in early 2021 by starting to post our thoughts on our own sustainable tourism work on our Instagram account. #sustainablekrepelin.
The idea of responsible tourism was also supported by our 2020 article series on tourism trends, many of which were essentially related to sustainable tourism.
On April 21, 2021, we also took the Visit Finland’s pledge for sustainable tourism, which you can see here. We would also like to encourage you, dear reader, to take the same pledge. It can be taken here. Together we can make a difference!
With the publication of the new website, we will now have a separate section on sustainable tourism on our website as of 28 April 2021, where we will publish news about our progress. The same thing continues on the Instagram side under the #sustainablekrepelin hashtag on a regular basis.
The next step is to obtain a sustainable tourism certificate from one of the organizations that manage them. At the time of writing, ECEAT Finland seems appropriate. Its quality aims can be found here. (Edit: we got it!)
Then when we eventually pass the audit and get our sustainability measurable, we can add the Visit Finland sustainable tourism badge to our website (edit: we got that, too!)
Still, there’s work to be done, but the most important thing is that development is continuous.
